I think his pride would play a part too, and he'd convince himself that he could handle it because it was his choice to do it, and it wasn't really who he was, and it was just an exchange of money for services etc.
Also, it's a lot easier to do degrading things if you don't think the people whose opinions matter will ever find out. (He was never going to send that letter to Dean.) :(
